This Week at the Farm: Transitioning to Late Fall

It’s the last weekend of October, which means there are only a few more days until Halloween! There’s still time for you to come out to the farm and pick your own pumpkin – the PYO patch is open 10-6 daily and 10-5 on Sunday. (Note: Little Farmers is cancelled this morning and Tuesday is the last class of the year.)

Also, our “summer” hours are coming to an end. On Wednesday, October 31st, the Hello Cafe is closing for the winter. But don’t worry! The farmstand will be open Friday to Sunday through December 16th.

In case you missed it in the email we sent earlier this week, newsletter updates will be delivered to your inbox on Thursday evenings from now on.

From the fields

Even with all of this cold, almost wintry weather, the greens are holding up quite well. The crew has been keeping the farmstand stocked full with chard, collards, kale, and spinach. They continue to process carrots and harvested parsnips (!) this week.

Yesterday was spent planting garlic down by the river. Each year, we save enough of the harvested garlic to use as seed for the next year’s crop. We’ve been growing this same variety for over a decade!

From the flower fields

It was a bittersweet week for the greenhouse staff this week. The cut flower gardens, across from the farmstand, were mowed down and the plastic ripped up.

While it’s sad to see the season ending, we’re happy knowing that these gardens and flowers inspired and brought joy to so many community members, visitors, brides, and their families.

Now that the gardens are cleared, we’re already looking ahead to next year. Friday was spent planting leftover bulbs from the farmstand, which is now filled with a beautiful array of indoor plants.

Hello Cafe Closing for the season

Stop by before Wednesday to get your last maple latte and freshly baked scone of the season! Bread puddings, scones, muffins, and espresso drinks will not be available after the Hello Cafe closes.

You can, however, satisfy your caffeine and sugar cravings with self-serve drip coffee and hot cider as well as freshly baked breads and sweets, available in the farmstand throughout the fall.

Bulk orders

A couple weeks ago, we sent a survey asking about interest in bulk ordering kitchen products in November, December, and through the winter. As it turns out, there is not enough interest to officially offer the option this year. If you are still interested in bulk ordering, please feel free to email Theo. She may be able to accommodate your request.

Fall Hours Reminder

October 31 is last day of our summer hours. We are closed on Thursday, November 1 and our fall hours start Friday, November 2. Through December 16, the farmstand is open 3 days a week – Fridays 12-6, Saturdays 10-3, and Sundays 10-3.

Planning for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving week, we’re open Monday to Wednesday, closed Thursday and Friday for the holiday, and open again Saturday and Sunday with regular hours. Get the details here. In addition to our regular products, we’ll also offer an option to special order farm-made sweets, sides, etc. in advance. Stay tuned for more info!

Need a turkey? We are a pick up location for two local farms providing turkeys for the holiday.

Back Beyond Farm’s fresh, certified organic turkeys will be delivered on Tuesday, November 20 ($5.00/lb). Maple Wind Farm’s 8-14 lb. frozen turkeys, delivered the Friday before, are pasture-raised, non-GMO ($5.25/lb). Reserve one by adding your name and contact information to the list in the farmstand.
