Cooking Inspired
By Lindsay Pattison – August 6, 2015Searching for new recipes can sometimes be a bit daunting. I am drawn to the cookbook aisle of the bookstore to book covers that capture beautifully plated dinners and appetizers. Inevitably, as I sift through the book, fascinated with the colors and apparent textures, I become increasingly hungry and curious. But then, the recipes are often not practical for day-to-day meals at my house (think complicated sauces and multi-step preparations - no thanks!). Read more →

Room to Grow
By Lindsay Pattison – July 31, 2015I become giddy sometimes when given the opportunity to learn something new. My brain gets into sponge mode, and all I really want to do is soak up new information and then act on it. So last Tuesday, June 21, when our entire staff met for a shared lunch, an open Q&A session, then split into small groups to learn about a topic of choice, I was elated. I grabbed my notebook, a pen, changed my shoes, and headed to the fields toward the chicken coop, ready to learn about how to raise hens. I didn’t even care that I was the nerdy one taking notes - I was happy to be in the open air, learning about measurements of hen houses, laying schedules, and types of feed and protein percentages. Sustainable Food Goodness
July 23, 2015My feet were planted on the farm early in April. My introduction to Cedar Circle life was planting our salad mix and scallions in a hail storm with crew mates, and spending many days in our strawberry field pulling weeds with roots strong enough to stabilize skyscrapers. It has been a good ride thus far: 80 work days with few predictable moments, including sliced fingers and rashes from the spiny squash and wild parsnip. I have new appreciation for a good pair of boots, rain gear with trustworthy zippers, garlic scapes, and anyone who can sew the tears in the asses of my pants. Read more →

First Impressions
By Eric Tadlock – July 10, 2015The rewards of the first few months of work here at Cedar Circle Farm and Education Center have all been sweet. Along with the delicious strawberries, the farm has been graced with several classes of happy, inquisitive and bright young students here to observe, learn, and enjoy the farm with their classes. Students ranging in ages from kindergarten to high school have observed predation in the greenhouses, colonies of bees working busily to gather nectar from our early flowering fruits, the decomposers in our compost piles, and much more. A Note from Lindsay
By Lindsay Pattison – July 1, 2015I remember the day my husband and I moved from our downtown Indianapolis condominium to a quaint apartment in East Thetford like it was yesterday. Four years ago on June 1, 2011, my husband and I, along with our mothers and one sibling, were sweating bullets unloading boxes and furniture on an uncharacteristically hot June morning. Read more →
