This Week at the Farm: Doughnuts, Veggies, Pies, and More!

It helps to have a sense of humor when the days are cold and long, especially at the end of the season. “We’re putting straw down on the strawberries today,” elicits soft giggles from our crew, who are always smiling, laughing, and joking no matter what they’re doing.

There’s work to do outside, even on the coldest days—harvesting fresh lettuce mix and kale (and washing it, too!), making dried wreaths, bagging onions, potatoes, carrots, and parsnips in the barn, winterizing the fields, and more.

Yes, we do still have fresh greens and oh-so-much tasty produce, grown in our certified organic fields. To go with your veggies, we have farm-made breads, spreads, and more! And something sweet (for breakfast, dessert, or a snack): CIDER DOUGHNUTS! This is the last weekend we’ll have them this season, so make sure to stop by and grab one before they’re gone.

Keep reading to find out what yummy foods you can get in the farmstand for your holiday feast. (We’re open Friday through Wednesday this week!)

Decorate for the festivities

We have more than just food in the farmstand, as always! Decorate your table and home with lovely arrangements, wreaths, and live plants. They also make great host or hostess gifts!

  • Dried flower arrangements
  • Rosemary plants – This woody, fragrant herb adds both color and texture to your home.
  • Houseplants – Brighten up your holiday decor with a bit of green foliage!
  • Wreaths – Choose from dried grapevine wreaths or fresh evergreen.

This year, you can choose a simple, decorated evergreen wreath or a plain one, if you want to add your own personal touch!

A Local Feast

We have everything you need to support your local farm with your Thanksgiving Feast—pickled peppers, cocktail sauce for shrimp cocktail, cranberry sauce, marinated artichoke hearts, apple sauce, spreads, and salad dressings—all farm-made! Plus, local meats and cheeses to round out your appetizer platter.

We’re also making a limited quantity of pies and cupcakes, available Tuesday and Wednesday only. Pre-order by 6pm on Friday to make sure you get exactly what you want for your holiday meal!

If you want to make your own Thanksgiving feast, we can help with that, too. To help you get started, we have: focaccia cubes for your stuffing (starting on Saturday), frozen pie crusts, and frozen pumpkin purée. Start from scratch and make a pie with our certified organic winter squash, use our potatoes and root vegetables to make a mash, roast up some root veggies for a seasonal side, or make a salad with our fresh greens.

Middle School Cooking

In the first Cooking for Middle Schoolers class on Monday, students practiced their knife skills while making fresh spring rolls with our own farm-grown, certified organic carrots and daikon and watermelon radishes. They made a peanut sauce for dipping, too!

Jr Iron Chef VT

The next session of Middle School Cooking starts February 3! At the end of the 6 weeks, the group will compete in Vermont FEED’s Jr Iron Chef VT — a statewide culinary competition for middle and high school students, where teams of 3-5 students create “nutritious, local dishes to inspire school meal programs”. Not only is it a valuable learning experience, but it’s a super fun event, too! Signups open after Thanksgiving. In the meantime, mark your calendar!

November is flying by! How can it possibly be Thanksgiving next week, and December not long after? We’re open for four more weekends, and the farmstand is still stocked full.

Be sure to stop by and say hello before we close. We’d love to see you!
