Hello Café Lead

About the Position

The Café Lead assists the Farm Retail Manager in leading the farmstand and Hello Café crew in the daily operations of the cafe. They are responsible for ensuring that guests have the best experience when they visit the farm’s café, including but not limited to: practicing excellent customer service skills, making drinks according to recipe, and maintaining a clean and presentable workspace. The Café Lead works closely with other leads in the farmstand, the Vegetable Production team, Annual & Perennial Department, and Kitchen Manager to make sure that products are displayed effectively, inventory is accurate, and staff are educated about the products. They are also the point-person for farmstand staff and all other department managers when the Retail Manager is not present.

The ideal candidate for this position will have leadership experience, a service-minded attitude and a friendly demeanor, and a strong interest in food, cooking, and local organic agriculture.

Major Responsibilities

  • Work with the Farm Retail Manager to oversee the operations of the Hello Café.
  • Work with the Farm Retail Manager to ensure prices/products are correct in the POS system and presented to guests through accurate signage.
  • Welcome guests by determining their beverage interests and needs; provide information about the drinks and baked goods offered and answer any questions
  • Get to know the regulars and form strong relationships with them.
  • Prepare drinks by following standardized preparation techniques; serve baked goods using safe food handling practices.
  • Communicate with the Kitchen Staff as needed; keep the cafe stocked with baked goods
  • Train staff to make drinks and set the standard to meet guest expectations.
  • Maintain inventories of coffee and other cafe supplies, including cleaning products; communicate ordering needs to Farmstand Leads and Farm Retail Manager on a regular basis.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and healthy work environment by following organization standards and sanitation regulations.
  • Keep equipment operational by following operating and cleaning instructions; maintaining supplies; calling for repairs as needed.
  • Improve quality results by studying, evaluating, and redesigning processes; implementing changes.
  • Clean, maintain, and improve the appearance of the cafe interior and exterior; keep it presentable at all times, both inside and out.
  • Troubleshoot issues with the POS.
  • Answer questions about the products we sell, our growing practices, CSA, education programs, and farm policies. Directing guests to other departments or administrative staff to get their questions answered in a timely manner.
  • Be a model barista; bar skills, customer service and enthusiasm to share knowledge with the team.
  • Assist with opening the farmstand, and cover farmstand shifts as needed.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds on a regular basis.

Qualifications

Required Skills or Experience

  • At least 1 year of experience in a leadership role, ideally in a cafe environment.
  • Proven experience training and motivating staff
  • Problem solving, troubleshooting, and thinking on your feet in a retail setting
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate others
  • Strong communication skills with guests, coworkers, and staff
  • Strong organization skills; observant and detail oriented
  • Problem solving, troubleshooting, and thinking on your feet in a retail setting

Desired Skills or Experience

  • Knowledge of food retail, especially produce and coffee
  • A good aesthetic sense and the ability to create visually appealing retail displays
  • Inspirational attitude; proven ability to create a motivating environment

Compensation

This is a seasonal position, 20-40 hours per week from April through October. The Café Lead is an hourly position with benefits including paid sick leave, fresh produce, and a discount to our farmstand. Salary is $16-19/hr, depending on experience and qualifications.
